Bird Watching Experience in Fort Portal
Uganda is rich in different bird species, the richest in Africa indeed, and Fort Portal is at the heart of all 8 major birding destinations in Western Uganda alone. We have so far recorded 1060 species; a remarkable density, for a country as small as Uganda. This walk will give you an introduction to the variety of bird-species in a western Ugandan setting. Learn from a specialized guide how to identify the different birds, their calls and their habits.
During the walk you will visit three distinct birding-spots, where many birds find their home, even though the city is just around them.
1. Nyakimya Swamp, a breeding area for Grey-Crowned Cranes, the white egret and a home of mouse-birds and starlings.
2. Whispering Palm Gardens, situated in the city center and attracting unique birds including; the Black-and-White Casqued HornBill, the Hammerkop and many others.
3. Tooro Botanical Gardens, founded to conserve the flora of the Albertine Rift Valley, with more than 100 different bird species roaming around its gardens, marshes and tree stands. Next to small species like flycatchers and sunbirds, there is a pair of Palm-Nut Vultures nesting in a stand of huge eucalyptus-trees.
