Richard and his team at Kabarole are exactly the kind of specialist tour operators that travellers should support. Richard is renowned all over Uganda for his knowledge of the Rwenzori mountains, and the birdlife in particular (most of the big tour operators in Kampala sub-contract their birding to him). Any halfway serious wildlife enthusiast travelling to Fort Portal needs to get in touch.

I travelled around Fort Portal area with Kabarole in June last year and what is particularly good about them is their profound knowledge of their patch of Uganda (maybe the most scenic bit in one of Africa’s most beautiful countries). They really know it inside and out.

A company for true Africa travellers

Richard Tooro is a great guide and very proud of his country ‚ he loves the birds and animals, is so well informed about them, and also enjoys introducing us to the people and culture of Uganda. He takes wonderful care of us and we return year after year.

"Kabarole Tours has become a driving force in nature conservation and community development projects around Fort Portal and the Rwenzori at large." - Simon Musasizi, The Observer

"The fight Richard Tooro [Founder and Managing Director of Kabarole Tours] did fight to maintain the wetlands, we, as tourists and citizens, do as well benefit from as nature and inhabitants do, isn’t over. It’s an ongoing struggle to maintain the area, to maintain the school and to give contribute to environment itself. It is a noble cause, but it’s the tea that is selling and Kihingami Wetlands same as Richard is dependent on donors and a higher scale of tourist to keep going." - Karin Felzmann, Kabarole Research and Resource Centre
